The other crotchet
Crot⋅chet | noun | A word very like crochet that has nothing directly to do with needlework, crotchet is a musical quarter note — the notation for which looks like a hook, which is the etymological connection to crochet, which is a delightful bit of language lore. But the second meaning of crotchet is my motive for sharing it: a nutty notion, a perverse or unjustified belief, like a hobbyhorse or megrim (another postworthy word).
That conspiracy crank had more crotchets than socks.
