Why Canadians are mad at America

For Canada, Trump’s brain-dead trade war started months before he started slapping tariffs on countries all over the world. But it wasn’t just about trade. Between his election and inauguration, Trump also menaced us on a near daily basis with his “51st State” bullshit. It felt like being humped by large, growling dog — while the “moderate” Trump apologists told us, “Don’t worry, he’s friendly!” We were baffled and horrified and outraged, and many Americans didn’t seem to get it, which made it worse — until our elbows went up [CBC video].

And “there is no enemy like a friend betrayed [Fb photo].”

Back in February and March, Canadian “Mugsy Margarit” of Gonzo Genealogy [Fb profile] compiled a well-written and comprehensive timeline of Trump’s insults to Canada [Fb post] to try to explain the situation to any Americans who would listen…

“One thing I’ve learned over the past few weeks, and it’s been a bit of a sobering lesson, is that a lot of Americans I know don’t actually know what’s going on between the US and Canada right now, and just how seriously Canadians are taking this. So, against my better judgement, here’s a timeline to explain why we’re here, and why we’re angry.

“To my American friends, I know most of you are amazing and generous people. You didn't ask for this, and I understand that. I hold no ill will towards you, whatsoever. But I must stress, with as much seriousness as I can, the amount of damage this has done.”

It’s an astonishing timeline. There are one hundred and thirty items on it, just up to the end of March … and it’s not like things have gotten any better since then.
